According to statistics from Austria, 191 people died in traffic accidents in Austria in the first six months. This is 26% more than in the first half of 2021. The number of accident victims aged 65 and over was evident in the statistics.
Between January and June 2022, 2,799 elderly people (aged 65 and over) were involved in a road accident in Austria. This is 22% more than in the same period last year (2021: 2,288 victims). The number of elderly people killed and injured in traffic in the first half of the year thus reached the highest value since the beginning of digital recording in 1992.
Six Children Died
Six children (up to 14 years old) were among the 191 deaths in the first half of 2022. Over the past seven years, that number was only higher in 2019, with eight children killed in accidents. Four of the six children were under the age of four at the time of the accident. The highest proportion of alcohol-related accidents in the last 30 years was 8% of all road accidents involving personal injury in the first half of 2022 alcohol-related accidents.
